One Saturday morning, Mikey opened his mailbox and found something strange — a small pink envelope sealed with a heart-shaped sticker. His name was written on the front in glittery ink.

He carefully tore it open. Inside was a tiny note:

Mikey read the note again. He grinned. He loved reading, and he loved a good mystery. He grabbed his backpack and headed toward the old factory at the edge of town.

The front door creaked open as soon as he touched it. A tiny pink doll with curly red hair and big blue eyes stepped into the light. It was Poppy.

"You came!" she said, her pull-string spinning. "I knew you would. Let's find those keys together!"

Poppy led Mikey through a long hallway filled with colorful toy boxes stacked floor to ceiling. Old posters on the walls showed smiling toy characters. A faint smell of sawdust and paint floated through the air.

"The first door is at the end of this hall," Poppy said. "Behind it is my friend Huggy Wuggy. He is big, blue, and has the fluffiest fur you have ever seen. He is very gentle, but he got scared and has been hiding ever since the factory closed."

Mikey looked at a tall poster of Huggy Wuggy. The blue toy had long arms that stretched wide and a huge smile. A sign below the poster read: "Huggy Wuggy — Best at giving hugs since 1984!"

At the end of the hall, a large wooden door stood locked with three golden latches. Above the door was a sign that said: "Answer to Open."

Mikey cracked his knuckles. He was ready.

With Huggy Wuggy walking behind them, Mikey and Poppy entered the next room. It was much darker here. Purple lanterns hung from the ceiling and a sweet, sleepy smell drifted through the air.

"This is the Dream Room," Poppy whispered. "My friend CatNap lives here. He is a purple cat toy who loves to sleep. He is shy and quiet, but once he is your friend, he will always watch over you while you rest."

Mikey squinted through the dim light and spotted a large purple cat curled into a ball in the corner. CatNap's round eyes blinked slowly. He had soft, rounded ears and a long tail that swayed back and forth like a clock's pendulum.

"He will only wake up fully if we answer his riddle questions," Poppy explained.

Mikey took a deep breath of the sweet lavender air and nodded. He felt a little sleepy himself, but he was too determined to stop now.

The final door was bright yellow — painted with sunflowers and paw prints. Music floated from behind it, a cheerful tune that made Mikey want to dance.

"This is where DogDay lives!" Poppy said, her blue eyes lighting up. "He is a golden dog toy with a big smile and floppy ears. He used to lead sing-alongs for all the toys every morning."

Mikey pressed his ear to the door and could hear a friendly voice humming. He felt a warm, eager feeling in his chest.

"DogDay loves words," Poppy continued. "He believes that if you know more words, you can tell better stories. And better stories make the world a kinder place."

Mikey thought about that. He thought about all the stories his dad had told him, all the books they had read together. He realized that words were like keys too — they opened up whole new worlds.

"I'm ready," he said.
